A situação atual do M. bovis apresenta um cenário difícil de combater contra este agente patogénico. A grande resistência antibiótica aos fármacos antimicrobianos frequentemente utilizados no campo, adicionada à falta de uma vacina ideal, sugere que é necessária muito mais investigação para obter boas ferramentas de controlo. Além disso, as características intrínsecas do M. bovis, que demonstram diferenças de virulência entre as estirpes de campo, a dificuldade de diagnóstico e a capacidade de se tornarem infeções crónicas ou induzidas, tornam difícil o controlo. Tendo em conta que é um dos principais agentes envolvidos na BRD, a boa gestão das instalações, a vigilância e o controlo de outros agentes patogénicos relacionados são essenciais para minimizar o impacto do M. bovis nas explorações até que sejam desenvolvidas novas ferramentas.
