A IBR continua a ser um fator significativo para o complexo de doença respiratória bovina e tem efeitos significativos na produção e fertilidade nas manadas de gado. A síndrome respiratória clássica com envolvimento da conjuntiva e do trato respiratório superior permanece imediatamente reconhecível e a natureza altamente infeciosa do vírus torna o controlo perante um surto difícil. A faceta de latência do herpesvírus típico tornou a sua erradicação extremamente difícil na maioria dos países, com apenas um grupo de países da Europa a fazerem progressos com programas de erradicação, no entanto o controlo é possível com fortes protocolos de vacinação de 6 meses e monitorização.
