3. How to diagnose atrophic rhinitis?

The diagnosis of AR is based on the evaluation of clinical signs in live animals and in the post mortem identification of lesions in the nasal turbinates and nasal septum. In addition, laboratory diagnostic tests are used to identify the presence of Pasteurella multocida and Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Currently, Atrophic Rhinitis (AR) in domestic pigs is an underdiagnosed disease; however, it is becoming more and more important as a re-emerging disease. This is why all veterinarians should include it in the list of infectious respiratory diseases affecting the performance of pigs.
