SPEEDCELL project

Accelerate the development
and production of biologics

The SPEEDCELL project is a four-year European Union co-funded initiative led by HIPRA. It aims to accelerate the development and manufacturing of biologics, enabling a rapid response to health emergencies in line with the European Union’s “100 Days Mission”

The project is co-funded by the European Union through the EU4Health programme and managed by HaDEA (European Health and Digital Executive Agency).

Project objectives

SPEEDCELL is designed to transform the development and manufacturing of biological medicines, making these processes faster, more flexible and scalable in the context of health emergencies.

To achieve this, the project focuses on four main objectives:

  • Optimising cell line development, to significantly shorten development timelines for biological medicines, particularly vaccines and monoclonal antibodies.
  • Shortening timelines for biologics manufacturing, by establishing a robust, rapid and scalable cell-based manufacturing platform.
  • Increasing flexibility and scalability in production, to support the “100 Days Mission”, ensuring that new vaccines and therapeutics can be developed and produced within 100 days during public health emergencies.
  • Strengthening EU medicine supply resilience, by improving supply chain robustness and reducing dependence on external manufacturing capabilities, in line with the Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe.

Addressing global health needs

Global health crises highlight the need for faster, more efficient and scalable solutions for vaccines and biologics.

SPEEDCELL addresses these challenges by accelerating development and manufacturing processes based on advanced cell line technologies, helping to strengthen preparedness for emerging health threats.

Key challenges

To address these needs, SPEEDCELL focuses on four key challenges:

Alignment with European strategies

SPEEDCELL is aligned with European strategies aimed at strengthening health security and addressing systemic shortages of medicines, particularly in the context of health crises and pandemics.

Through the EU4Health programme, the project contributes to building more resilient and responsive healthcare systems across Europe.

Project results

SPEEDCELL was launched in 2025 and will run until 2029.

The project addresses key challenges in health preparedness and is expected to transform how vaccines and biologics are developed and manufactured in emergency contexts. Results will be progressively generated and shared throughout the project’s duration.
